Bentley and Heyne, followed by Nauck and others, consider the last two lines of the book as spurious. The words *h)/mati kei/nwn, in combination with the plupf. te/tanto, certainly look as though they belonged to the end, not to the beginning of a day's fighting, and may therefore have been a rhapsodist's tag, meant to wind up the end of a day's recitation, and omitted when Δ was immediately followed by P. Knight E. suspects 539-42 as well.
