Pharnaspes was an Achaemenid, though not of the direct royal
line; it was usual for Persian kings to marry members of their own
family (e.g. Darius and Atossa, daughter of Cyrus). H. lays stress
on the name and lineage of the mother of Cambyses, because the
Egyptians made him the son of an Egyptian princess (iii. 1 n.).
