I must own, that I feel somewhat disposed to follow the
suggestion of Wigan, and read ἥβης: for it is well known
that pestilential buboes occur principally in the groin (i. e. near the pubes), as is first noticed
by Procopius (de Bello Persico, 22, 23). I am not aware, moreover, that
any of the ancient authorities refer the pestilential buboes to the liver, but to the glands of
the groin. See Agathias, Hist. v. and the other authorities quoted at P.
ÆGINET. t. i. p. 232, Syd. Soc. Edit.

γίγνονται οὐδενός. νεύρων δὲ τέτανος,
ἐπιληψίη δὲ κεφαλῆς. ὧδε οὖν καὶ ἡ συγκοπὴ
καρδίης ἐστὶ καὶ ζωῆς νοῦσος. ὁκόσοι δὲ στομάχου ἡγέονται
τὸ πάθος ἔμμεναι, οὕνεκα σιτίοισί τε καὶ οἴνῳ,
μετεξετέροισι δὲ καὶ ψυχρῷ, ἡ
δύναμις ἐστάθη, καὶ τὸ κακὸν ἐξηλάθη,
οἱ δέ μοι δοκέουσι καὶ τὴν φρενῖτιν τριχῶν τῆς κεφαλῆς,
καὶ τοῦ δέρματος νοῦσον ἡγέεσθαι, οὕνεκεν
κουρῇ καὶ τέγξι αὐτέων ῥΗίζουσι οἱ φρενιτι κοί . ἀλλὰ γὰρ
τῆς καρδίης γειτόνη μα καίριόν ἐστι ὁ στόμαχος, ἐξ οὗπερ
ἕλκει ἡ καρδίη οἰκεῖον ἢ ἀξύμφορον. καὶ γὰρ καὶ διὰ πνεύμονος
ἕλκει πνεῦμα εἰς ἀναπνοὴν ἡ καρδίη, ἀλλ' οὐχὶ πνεύμων ἐξ
ἴσης ἀρχῆς ἀναπνέει.
Were I disposed to indulge in conjectural
emendation, I should certainly not hesitate in this place to read, ἐξ
ἴσης τῇ ἀρχῇ. I wonder the present unsatisfactory reading has escaped the
animadversions of all the editors and commentators.

ἐν τοῖσι ὀργάνοισι αἱ δυνάμιες, ἀλλ' ἔνθα ἀρχὴ ζωῆς ἦν καὶ
ἰσχύος. στόμαχος δὲ οὔτε ἀρχὴ οὔτε χωρίον ζωῆς· βλαβήσεται
δέ τις διὰ ἀτονίην. καὶ γὰρ καὶ τὰ καρδιοβόλα βρώματα οὐ τὸν
στόμαχον σίνεται, ἀλλὰ δι' αὐτέου τὴν καρδίην · ἐπεὶ καὶ οἱ
ἐπὶ τοῖσδε θνήσκοντες σημεῖα ἴσχουσι καρδίης πάθεος,
σφυγμοὺς μικροὺς, ἀδρανέας,
πάταγον τῆς καρδίης, ἐπὶ πηδήσι καρτερῇ,
σκοτόδινος , λειποθυμίη ,
νάρκη, καὶ παρέσιες
μελέων, ἱδρὼς ἄσχετος,
πουλὺς, ψύξις ὅλου,
ἀναισθησίη , ἀφωνίη.
ποῦ δὴ τὸν στόμαχον πάσχειν τάδε; ἅττα δὲ
αὐτέου ἴδια, ναυτίη,
ἔμετος, ἀποσιτίη,
λὺγξ, ἐρεύξιες,
ὀξυρεγμίη · ἐπὶ δὲ τοῖσι καρδιώσσουσι καὶ αἰσθήσι ὀξύτεροι,
ὡς ἰδεῖν καὶ ἀκοῦσαι μᾶλλον ἢ πρόσθεν,
καὶ γνώμῃ εὐσταθέστεροι,
