Luminous Blue Variables (Michelle Boisseau)

"If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men believe and admire; and preserve for many generations the remembrance of the city of God which had been shown. But every night come out these envoys of beauty, and light the universe with their admonishing smile."

--Emerson

Inside the hollow rock, following the sound
of water, still we climbed, he first and I second,
until I glimpsed through an opening

some of the beautiful cargo the sky carries.
And then I climbed out to see the stars again.
As I leaned back, taking long drinks of air

like someone draining a cold bucket,
my eyes opened farther and let the stars
behind the stars come forward. As the quiet

became a steady throb, I realized
he was gone. Though I looked for him feelingly
among the stiff shadows, starlit

rocks and bushes, I knew he had gone
at the moment of my deepest looking,
gone like a ship on the horizon,

a dimpling, an echo, then beyond

the bronze gong of my father's voice
